Hearty Midwest values with a hint of rebellion.
This year consider giving yourself the gift of Mercy, and while you are at it, sprinkle that stuff on everything next year. We all have bad days, run hot tempered or late for a meetings. Stop. Breathe. Give yourself Mercy. We beat ourselves up so much, so often, and quite often over items which will not matter a year from now.
Don't say, "Sorry I'm late." Give yourself mercy and say, "Thank you for waiting for me."
And when that parent is struggling with their screaming toddler in the grocery store line, don't roll your eyes and huff - they already have their hands full. Stop. Breathe. Give them mercy. Offer a smile or even try to distract the child (yep, I'm that creepy lady who talks to fussy children).
Your significant other may blow up over literal spilled milk. Stop. Breathe. Show them mercy. Offer to clean it up or toss a rag at them and yell "Tag You're It" and run to the other room. Whatever will help show caring and diffuse the situation.
Holidays can be very hard for some people, if there is any time to show mercy, it is now. But for me, I know I need it all year long, so I encourage you to make it part of your daily mantra for 2019.
Today, I will show mercy to myself and others.
Make the choice. Make the change.
